Margaret Buchanan

ART DIRECTOR | GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Margaret Buchanan is an award-winning art director/graphic designer and head of Buchanan Design, which she founded in 1989. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, Margaret holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors in Communication Arts and Graphic Design. She later served as an instructor in the VCU Communication Arts department and as senior art director at the Martin Agency, ranked consistently among the top creative advertising agencies in America.

An artist as well as a designer, Margaret has taught and lectured on painting. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is represented in a number of private collections, including those of Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Bank of America, Media General and the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

Margaret has a special affection for books and book design. Her hand-built, limited-edition book, First Impression: A China Diary, was selected as one of 50 Books of 1996 by the American Institute for Graphic Arts and was shown across the United States as part of the AIGA/Library of Congress Centers for the Book exhibition and across Canada as part of the Art of the Book ’98 Canadian Bookbinder’s and Book Artist’s Guild Traveling Exhibition. Her book is now part of the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Collection, the Mobil Corporation Archives, and the personal collection of David Rockefeller.
